Abstract It's something every company that has a customer wants to know: Was the customer satisfied and why or why not? It used to be that no news was good news, if a customer bought a product or service and didn't complain about it, it must have done the job. But it didn't take long to understand that the more you know about why your customers are happy the more you can get them to spend money on being happy again. This often led to direct-mail and telephone campaigns that would often yield so few responses that the effort almost became meaningless. With the speed, ease and convenience of the Internet, however, many have warmed up to the idea that the Web may finally be an answer to the elusive nature of measuring customer satisfaction.
